View Full Version : High security cheese
You, along with several others have been hired to guard some cheese being transported from one town to a cheeseless one. Of course you find this a rediculous waste of time and effort, since any bandits would find the shoes on your feet more valuable than all the cheese, but money is money and you want to fill your pockets. While yawning you notice two little eyes in the darkness, leaning forward to investigate you discover its a mouse. Thinking only of the cheese protection job for which you were hired, you reach out to grab it but stop as it speaks,"WAIT! my name is Treg and if you help me get that cheese i could get you more money then they are paying you." Upon hearing this the others have gathered around the mouse as well. You doubt the mouse could actually have enough money to hold that up, but still a moral dilema is reached; do you honor your contract and try to stop the mouse, or do you say the heck with honor and go for the greedy choice which could result in even more money for your pockets?

Hmmm - I say pinch off a piece from the bottom of the cheese, give it to the lil mouse and call it road damage...course that greedy little mouse is probably going to demand more cheese...and more cheese...
Treg, the mouse, will only pay for all the cheese. And he is not greedy, he just has an uncontrolable urge to eat cheese, he is a cheese addict.

A new voice timidly inquires, "Might we see the color of this gentlemouse's gold, before we come to a decision?" It is Simon, one of the youngest and least-experienced of the cheese-guards, obviously not hired for any particular skill. He is wearing no armor save for an ancient-looking leather cap, which buckles under his chin and makes him look completely ridiculous. Other than that, he is dressed as a townsman, although his clothes are ill-fitting and not very new, obviously stolen from someone and hurriedly donned. For a weapon he is carrying what appears to be a broken tree-branch, with a lanyard attached to one side and tied off on the thick leather belt around his waist. Although he is certainly not formidable in battle, if he has in fact ever seen one, his proposal is a reasonable one, born more of greed than any kind of good sense or cleverness...
Treg cannot carry it on him, he lacks pockets and so much gold would slow him down, all he has on him is the location of which the cheese and gold is to be exchanged.

"half of us should follow the rodent to teh gold if we do not return by nightfall tomarrow. continue on with the cheese. i will lead the expedition for the gold for mice are cousins to rats and rats are sneaky things".
sit 1. there is gold. apon seeing the gold she steps on treg and digs her shoe into the ground killing him, colects the gold, and returns to the party to deliver the cheese
sit 2. there is no gold. she kills the mouse as such and returns to deliver the cheese.

Simon steps between the musing elf and her potential victim, although he is certain that they don't call it Treg the Mighty, Slayer of Dragons, for no reason at all... The faint light of greed is shining in his formerly dull eyes, and he pulls out his broken tree-branch in a strange liquid motion, something which should have been impossible for such an obvious dullard. Simon brandishes his silly-looking weapon, although even the most casual observer would notice that he holds it with a certain deadly ease, as if this were a natural extension of his arm.
"There will be no stepping today, madame elf, except for your stepping back around the other side of the cheese-wagon where you belong," He says in mock politeness. "My tree-branch and I have been hired to do a job, and we intend to do it, unless..." and here his eyes dart to the small shape of the mouse, which although threatened never twitched so much as a whisker... "Unless I am hired to do a better, more profitable job."
The thought races through his mind, That mouse was never in any danger at all, was it? quickly followed by another, How do I know that? but the questions melt away almost as if someone had grabbed them from his mind, and they occur to him no longer...
Treg will leave them to decide what action they will take. The wagon will take 5 days to reach its destination. Treg jumps off the the wagon and scurrys off into a bush, leaving behind a small piece of paper with a map to the center of the forest and instrucions that they have 2 days to bring the cheese to that location for the exchange.

The wagon hits a bump as it continues along its course, those potholes are a nuisance... or its the sleeping drunk thats steering the wagon's fault.
Mess, the drunk and designated half-asleep driver of the wagon, pulls hard on the reins and the wagon comes to a sudden screeching stop. "Aye, two lightly armed men straight ahead," he shouts.

Simon just stands there, half-listening to some of his fellow guards with their half-baked plans and ideas, musing to himself. They did not even notice what happened back there, how it was not my idea to step forward to protect a mouse... Something strange is going on here, and I'll just lay low until it reveals itself. He tightens his belt, readjusting the strangely-shaped bludgeoning weapon in its place, and as he does a low, metallic scraping sound can be heard under his clothing somewhere. He does not bother to argue with the others, but falls into place behind the dark demon as they continue on down the road, still talking...

Mess looks at the half-asleep woman inside and asks with a frown, "Whose side you are on, anyway?"
Seeing that one of the men has gone down with least or no resistance, Mess leaps to the ground to check the wagon for any damages. Upon closer inspection of the wheels, he notices that the mechanism which held the wheels and axle together has gone missing. He slaps the side of the wagon several times and commands in a rather loud voice, "You there, the one inside. Wake up, ya blastid bird. Time for you to put your skills to test. Simon looks nervously around for the mouse, whom he cannot for some reason find, and is therefore immediately uneasy. There is something strange about this, but he does not want to speak up due to his embarrassment from getting beat down by a guy with a torch.
As the wagon begins to move in the direction of their original destination, Simon begins to hope that the mouse will not return, and that they can just finish this job without any more strangeness along the way.
Unfortunately for Simon, this is not the way things turn out...
The horses hear a loud *BANG* and run as fast as they can, somehow breaking their harness and disapearing into the distance. Small teeth marks can be found on whats left of the harness and a broken paper bag blows across the trail.

"But his name is Fluffy and he is my only friend..." looking around suddenly, he realizes what he has just said out loud, and hopes no one was listening. Unfortunately for Simon, elves have very sharp ears. Frosty grabs the toy animal and stomps on it, breaking the cheap plastic into many pieces. With tears in the corners of his eyes, Simon says nothing, having just been thoroughly bullied, and having just lost his only friend on top of that...
...It is the beginning of a very bad day for him.

From the pieces of the ancient toy, rises a small wisp of smoke. The vapor slowly increases in size and substance... Vaguely, a form starts to take shape. As time slowly moves on, the mist swirls into an almost humanoid appearance, though even to the trained observer, it was difficult to decipher what it was. Suddenly, the precipitation clears and standing before Frosty and Simon is a figure in a dark robe and cowl.
"Blast it, Simon!," the figure said in a malicious tone, "That is the last drink I ever accept from you!." Turning to the elf who unknowingly released this incarnation from bondage, his tone changes.
"Unfortunate are the circumstances in which our paths cross, Frosty, but our fates shall again intertwine... until we meet again..."
Upon the last breath of air escaping the hollow area in his hood reserved for the face, the figure begins to fade from view, while doing so, it is possible to feel the aura of hatred towards his former captor, radiating out even after his substance has faded into the twilight of the evening.
Treg is waiting at the meeting locations, your options are A. go make the exchange or B. push the heavy cart to the village; The lack of horses will double the time to ten days, cut the pay from the village in half, and you will have to pay for the horses if you pick B.

The cheese has completely passed from his simple mind, for the time being, as he tries to remember how and why he could have ever trapped an incarnation of what looks like pure evil inside his only friend, Fluffy the plastic horse....
Like a puppet on a tangled string, his head suddenly snaps to the left, and the thing is immediately forgotten. He comes back to himself, hearing his own voice chanting over and over again, "A! A! A!"
He clamps a hand over his mouth and the chanting stops, although he has no idea what it possibly could mean. Thoroughly confused, as seems to be the usual for such a dullard, he takes a step forward, and does not even notice as he crushes the remains of what may have once been a toy of some kind into the dirt road...

The Figure fades into view at the location of Treg the Mouse... His lanky frame shudders as if touched by some unkown force.
"Little mouse, I have a proposition for you," the figure rasps, sounding short-winded. "Your devious plot has some merit, though it is not without its faults. This can be changed if thee will accept Mine help to carry out this grim and twisted plan." The words uttered from this living shell slip between a more archaic form of speech and that of present day, hinting that years could not measure the term of his existence. The figure waits silently while waiting for a reply from his proposed partner, uttering one last statement.
"This decision would be wise to made with utmost haste, for one whose mind lacks the ability to fear draws near to this location," comes almost as a whisper, barely heard over the sounds of the wild.
Treg looks up at the wierd thing, not knowing what it would want with cheese, "ok... but why do you want involved?"

"The cheese is not my goal, little mouse," The hooded being explained. "You have a plot in place that seems to be going in the correct direction as my motives. It would be a shame to have to set one up when yours is doing so nicely." The figure shifts slightly and draws a hollow breath before continuing.
"The cheese is yours, I have no use for such nourishment. On the other hand, there is a certain key individual who has irked me... His just rewards are coming, though I feel I have not the strength at this current time to alone conquer this simple being."
It seems the last words totally wore out The Hooded One... His head drooped and he seemed almost unable to stand. It was particular that this person could barely stand, yet believe he was able to help out in the scheme that was to unfold...

Meanwhile, back down at the wagon, things are not going so well. There seems to be some kind of argument as to what the plan of action should be, with no one able to agree with anyone else. Simon, however, is standing off to the side in the growing night, and has dropped both his leather helm and his strange treebranch weapon on the ground. A strange light seems to dance in his eyes, a flickering of sudden memory, and he looks sharply around as if he expects someone is standing behind him. From beneath his ill-fitting clothes he pulls a thin, silver dagger, not knowing why he did not notice it there before. More alert than he has been in hours, he hides the blade again and goes to join the others...
Treg looks at the hooded person, "well ok, i guess i dont have any reason to argue"
Mess shakes his head in dismay watching the beasts disappear into deep, dark forest. A moment of thought later, he turns in his seat and addresses the woman, "Watch over the cheese." "Erm - Your luggage made a left turn at Albequerque, and we are on a Road, in a Deep Dark Forest, delivering cheese to a town in a Realm Far, Far, Away. Yes...thats it. And there's evil afoot, and a rodent up to no good" She notices for the first time the new cart on the road, and notes the sign. "Oh! Delivering the cheese you say. Well, er, we may have complicated things there". He motions to a few empty crates in the back of the cart. "It was some mighty fine cheese indeed. I didn't touch the wheel of limburger or goat cheese though." Swiggy nods his head in agreement.
Zegmorien walks around the delivery cart to peer at the other cart on the road, scratches his head with the non-puppeted hand and then says to Shiqra, "Hmm.. we've been wondering about that booming voice and conspiratory squeaking for awhile while in our suite. Simon stares in disbelief at the once-heavy load of cheese which is now reduced to a couple varieties which only a mouse could love. "Maybe we should see about that deal he offered us, the one where he pays us and we forget about our delivery to that other town, wherever it is..." Although he knows that now the small amount of coin which would be his share from the mouse called Treg, assuming that there is any gold at all, would be quite paltry, he also knows that only a partial load of cheese delivered to a customer in a far-off town would be considered failure of mission and a complete forfeit of payment.
Fortune, and not mind-control mixed with dullness this time, has placed young Simon firmly in the rodent's line of thought...
The sun begins to rise and large spikes are seen jutting out of a bush, the spikes stir as the sunlight hits them; Then rise to reveal a manticore attached, apparently this is it's trail and it just found its breakfast. Simon, the nearest cheese-guard, dodges with a graceful quickness which he did not know he possessed, at least not on the conscious level of his mind. Rolling under the wagon, he comes up at the ready, a thin silver dagger in each hand retrieved from somewhere easily-accessible within the folds of his over-sized clothing. If only I can remember which of these stickers has the sleeping poison on it, the thought races through his mind as he does the one thing he can think of: he licks the tip of the right-hand blade.
"Nope, not that one... but now I wonder... how would it taste?" Simon licks his other knife, and as drowsiness steals him away from the battle he can be heard whispering to himself, "Cheeeeessse.... tasty, tasteey cheesssse..."
The fearsome manticore advances upon what looks like an easy kill, its spikes bristling with anticipation, so intent upon its soon-to-be victim that it is not ready for what happens next...
The manticore reaches down towards simon, deciding that such a measly traveler would serve as a healthy breakfast and the others can be preserved for dinner with the female.

Simon is still sitting in front of his wonderful cooking fire, but there is no longer a fire burning there. The flames have all leaped up to follow the magnificent dragon, and all that remains is a slightly pathetic pile of smoldering wagon-pieces. There will be no manticore burgers today, unless one cares to eat them raw, and Simon is not one of that persuasion. Dispirited, he turns and looks after the rapidly retreating Mess and his following dragon, and decides to do something about it. Two thin silver daggers appear in his hands, and he purposefully walks out into the thin new-growth that passes for a forest in these parts.
The dragon's trail is easy to follow, considering its bulk, and even though Mess could easily have been completely consumed by flame in even this short time, Simon does not hurry. Striding calmly but steadily after the beast, he emanates the quiet confidence of a lifelong lion tamer, without all the theatrics or any of the glittery clothing.
Up ahead, the beast has stopped, and as Simon arrives on the scene it becomes suddenly obvious that he is not needed here. Somehow, Mess has the monster in a headlock, but Simon stabs it a few times just to make sure...
Treg returns to the clearing, "Ok i got those favors cashed in so now....." He stops, noticing the lack of strange person and gold. "why you....." He turns around and gives the help he hired the order to find and capture the gold theif.
And indeed, Mess wrestled the mighty dragon into submission (with some help, of course). He leads the fire breathing monster to his party. He puts Simon in charge of the beast for the while that he dusts himself clean of ash, dirt and such. Then, he says with a calm voice, "I've got some good news and some bad news." He allows himself a brief pause to assess the current status of the party while giving his words the time to sink into the minds of all other members.

She looks hopefully at Mess "Do you think you get get that dragon to re-light the fire so we can all eat?" She wonders if they can all ride on the dragon, or if that would be too much for the mighty beast's pride to handle.
"So what's the news? And I think that mouse wants us to go after the strange person who stole the gold, although I am not sure we'll get any of it."

Simon watches in silent mirth as Mess forces the dragon to not only relight their fire, but also cook their interrupted manticore burgers to a tasty medium-well. It is so sad when such a mighty beast is beaten, he thinks to himself, but I for one will take full advantage of it.
"So, food for everyone!" Simon helps himself to a chunk of manti-burger, wishing only that he had some bread and ketchup. Between mouthfuls, he talks (very rudely, with his mouth full), "aeiury agbcvh vn, thrange perthon? mmph, gold?" Seeing that no one can understand him, he tries again, speaking very clearly: "For gold, I would accompany you to the ends of the earth. And cheese. Of course." No one thinks to comment on the fact that he was trying to say something completely different as he ate...

I have just created a new software license option and at the bottom of the page below a horizontal divider is an option for Low Security and High Security with the default being Low. Unless there is a reason for it, why have a choice and why default to Low?
I searched the help and this forum but could not find mention of this.
After creating the item it changes to "Low 4-Digit Code" whatever that means..?
Thanks
