View Full Version : Have your say - would you play on an extreme server?

By Extreme I mean a server with say a new day every four hours.
Of course nobody would play every game day (we expect people to occasionally sleep) but I thought it was worth seeing if there was any interest.

I have seen server with a new day every 1 hour! :? It just isn't to my play style to have that many game days so I agree it is for some but for me? no I wouldn't

The very first LotGD server I ever played on had a new day every 4 hours. It was kinda fun - of course I never got to play all 4 days, but at random times during the day I could log on and have a good chance of there beign a new day. Of course that server was the old basic kind - 1 town, no Heidi, and 10 turns per game day. So 4 game days kinda made up for that.

But then when you get 30 odd turns about 4 billion gold a DK or whatever stupidly high amount do you really NEED a new game day every hour or so? under normal rules maybe

Back to the topic?
(And to clarify on Rich's comment for the confused, Saucy's servers are quite balanced, except for when she is testing out new features. I believe he was referring to another server someone advertised on these forums.)

Wow Furion, I think I just got even more confused! We lost topic?
Could we have a little clarification and/or more detail from teh Wench on what an extreme server would entail to keep balance?

I suppose it means would you play on a server where you cannot hope to play all the turns that are available? lol. I haven't had much interest, so at the moment there won't be one run on GemDust.

We lost topic?
Saucy never talked about having any of that crazy stuff, like one hour days, or a bazillion gold and turns. And no one was expressing interest or disinterest in her proposal.

It doesn't matter. The idea was to gauge interest, because right now the tourneys have dropped off in player numbers so much that they're almost not worth running. The White tourney will still go ahead though, and it will be a Chillout so it doesn't take much time per day to play.

I know Saucy didn't mention any 'crazy' ideas, however most were still discussing the extreme part of the extreme server suggestion, as far as I could tell.
Also, interest and disinterest was being shown in the poll votes. Interest and disinterest in different areas of what may be involved in the suggestion were simply being discussed.
Anyways, back to topic again, I simply wouldn't have the time to play on an extreme server, as I can only log in to Classic (Central...whatever!! lotgd.net!!) once every day or two anyhow. If I tried out an extreme server it would work out the same as when I try tourneys, I'm well and truly behind the game before I even get the chance to set off on day 1!! :oops:

At some point in my todo list there is a tourney re-write scheduled.
What I would like to do is set it up so that players can hit their New Day button any time they like when it suits them. So if you are free for a week you can play 30 days in a row, and if not, you can play them spread out over a month. And if you're too busy this week, you can catch them all up next week instead.
But there are other things on that list first ;)
Does this sound a bit more useful for people?

It would sound useful to me if you got a finite number of new days that you got to trigger. I wouldn't want the me right now to compete with the me last year, since my play time has greatly diminished.

Hooray! I always thought that would be an excellent way to do it, but you wanted to reward players who made it back every day. I bet you'll have a much higher retention rate.

Sounds like a good idea, but I think SOME sort of cap on how many newdays you can activate in a row would also be a good idea

That's the main issue I have to contend with. Someone could play all their turns quickly at the beginning and then they're essentially immune from PvP for the entire tourney. I'll have to do some thinking on how to make it a bit fairer.
I also lose the revival potion lodge buy from the lodge, but seeing that the server is no longer even covering costs, it's unlikely to lose me much in the way of donations.

Could the New Day's accumulate over time? Say the usual New Day's per Real Day is 4; yesterday I could only play 2 days, so now today I have 6 days available, the usual 4 plus the 2 left over from yesterday.
Then if I wish, and have the time, I would be able to catch up to the players that have been able to play their 4 days per day and get ahead. It would be interesting to watch peoples' status jump up and down!
I know that sounds a little convoluted, but does it sound reasonable to everyone?

That's exactly how I envisioned it. You would have something of a balance there, too, since the people who play at a steady pace might have an advantage in the PvP arena, but the ones that wait until the last minute won't lose nearly as much from getting constantly killed in the fields - they'd just do several days in a row.

It's actually very difficult to do, because to add them up you need to trigger the New Day screen. It would also still keep you safe from PvP because you haven't logged in... so if you came in on the last three days and played the whole tourney through, you might only be slain once.
The other way to do it is for me to check when you were last online. Date math. Ew. Anyway, thanks for the ideas, I'll think it over. Maybe I can think of a way to reward players who dont bank up more than say 5 days at a time.

Could Banked days always put you in 'Low Spirits'?
RichPlaystation

Low spirits only cost you a few turns though doesn't it?

Points gained/lost due to the condition of your spirit:
Very High = 2
High = 1
Normal = 0
Low = -1
Very Low = -2
Resurrected = -6
I think you can change the numbers, though. I haven't personally tried, so I wouldn't be able to tell you how.

i think 4 hours is a bit too short... i'd say 6 or 8 would be ok - you don't want the days to be tooshort because the good thing about lotgd is that you don't get people playing for hours on end - it enables us to have lives out in the real world too even when we're tempted to keep playing and playing. we can't so we go and do something else, like eat..or something..
it's good. I think a shorter day would be good but we shouldn't go to extremes - 6 hours at the least and even that's quite short.

Oooh, I wouldn't be so sure about that. When I was leveling the fastest in terms of number of levels gained per 12 hours, I was also playing for four hours. I would hate to think of what it would be like if I had a more heavily FF-based build!
