Yet another question to ponder:
When role-playing, do you prefer to play a good character, an evil character, a neutral character, or some combination in between the two extremes.
I have always enjoyed playing a character that had been evil at one time, then had a life changing experience to become good. I like the conflict of the character always wanting to do what is good and right, but constantly being tempted by the evil that was once so strong in his life.

Its kind of annoying for myself. I try to play the evil ones, but somewhere along the line my own self sinks in, so I wind up playing the good guy with the questionable ethics.
I tried playing a Paladin one time in AD&D a long time ago. Man was that boring.

Generally, I play good. DH always plays evil. Makes for interesting games when we're both playing in the same party. ;)

Same here with the 'troubled evil past' thing... However, the characters I play are usually very chaotic-good in their actual dealings (even as far as to avoid strictly lying to NPCs... but giving them the wrong impression is just their fault.)
It does get me characters killed a lot though...

I tend to play lawful neutral.

I'm so evil actually when i play around i usually will just do whatever will benefit myself. Good or Bad whatever it takes. But definately not neutral.

I usually play a good character, but they always find a way of going insane and turning evil for a period of time...It's fun to be evil though, especially with no motives. You're just evil because you feel like it, and no one can solve it because there is no problem to make it so. Bwha ha ha ha. Yeah, I'm done...

::considers for a moment::
Typically I play good characters to the point of mirroring my own chaotic life where the fates are bracing against me as both blades remain drawn against their fury.
4 fates, One Lonestrider. . . I almost feel sorry for them.
::laughs:: Okay, seriously, Lonestrider isn't evil, he's just a bit twisted. He truly thinks of himself as a point of light in this dark and cruel universe. After playing nice FAR too long, he's going to take some shortcuts. He also thinks that he's suffered long enough for his art, now it's your turn.

I'm usually a combination of the two, but eventually, my character leans toward the good side more.

i've been told that im a kind person...
but when it comes to games i loooove being evil
when i play Jedi Knight Academy i love the dark skills, especially the grip skill, i can use it to strangle opponents to death or just thorw them over a cliff muhahaha
Karissa
02-01-2004, 09:10 AM
An interesting question...
Well, much as everyone would howl with laughter at the idea of Karissa being innocent...I do play her as 'good'. It would seem she's walking proof that you can be a nice person, and still cause trouble. I'm a nice person myself, and she is similar to me in some ways.
I've a bit of an interesting dilemna with her. There's Karissa the player, and Karissa the admin. (Your hint there - if I quit using colours in my speech, I'm in admin-mode.)
Karissa the player is fun-loving, mischevious. all for the good, into lots of laughter...and a bit of a thief with LoneStrider. Generally a good-girl but far from a goodie-two-shoes. She's up for any gag, with her rule being 'first do no harm', but she listens to any and all.
Karissa the admin is still generally good. Strict, aye...but fair at all times, even if the rules apply to those who are my friends. (Yes, she's gotten a bit of 'the monkey's paw' from JCP about granting wishes....but she's still not as evil as he tends to be.)
Either way, both sides of my duel-Karissa are good. No dark side for her. She likes to play a bit with others in it...but she's inherently good, if not quite innocent and angelic...

You know, I've TRIED making fully evil characters...It doesn't work! They get bored with being evil and turn good...And then I'll have a character I intentionally make good and people will go "You're so eeeevil." It's weird...Maybe I'm just mean enough to be evil. I dunno.
Contrary to popular opinion, I prefer playing on the side of Angels.
I don't always use the tactics of Angels, but certainly on their side.
As an admin, however, well, that's a different story.
A very different story.

Dark side? Yes please!
Light side? Maybe tommorow...
-----------------------------------
I tend to play shadowy neutral characters, who have a quiet loyal streak to them... this tends to get me cast into a bit of the dark side more often then not, but it makes for an interesting character type to play...

04-13-2004, 05:30 PM
As far as my characters I create go, Ithilden is the perfect example of how I like to play. I believe that she is a good person always out to help someone, but that doesn't stop her from getting alittle evil at times when something upsets her. oh yeah, and fire is good...fire is your friend

I'd say lawful good, a warrior who fights with honour, deals in courtesy and friendship. Believes in the tenets and arts of the soldier, his conscience always his guide.

It's good all the way for me. Except when I'm evil. Or neutral. Alright, so I can't make up my mind, but I'm normally good, you'd have to agree on that.
Llana
05-07-2004, 01:53 AM
My lotgd character, Llana of Shadow Realm, is about as neutral as they come. Being originally from an alternate, shadow, universe, the concepts of good and evil are actually quite alien to her. She is more animal than humanoid (even though she takes on humanoid forms in this realm), and acts more out of instinct than anything else.

I am always chaotic, just makes the game more fun, I am usually chaotic in my alignment too I start the game evil, then play some scenes good, only to decieve those who think a leopard can change his spots. Yet at the same time, I would NEVER backstab. If you catch it.

There are two persons in me... fighting...
One, The Angel born In hell (this world),
second, The Devil meaning well (realistic world)
i don't know who is winning...certain is that the angel is protected by love, real love and nature....when the devil is protected by disapointment, loneliness, despair, and anger

Dark Helmet: So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.
Pretty much sums up my character. Evil all the way!
My characters, depending on who I am roleplaying and who I am playing with and what kind of game vary mostly between good and evil.
But seriously, my favourite is a good person who does anything for the good of himself, his friends and the world. If he has to kill an innocent landowner he will do that, rape his wife and kill his family for his own good and for the people under the landowner's realm, thinking he did the right thing. He also tends to be neutral while talking to people he doesn't know or who atleast appear that do not know him.

I would first like to give the disclaimer that, as anyone who is reading this topic's posts can see, the line between good and evil is never absolute. You can never be truly one or the other...it is mostly agreed upon, however, that there are some behaviors that a truly good person would never become involved in, and the same for truly evil. At any rate, this is a decision each person must make, so there is no one right answer; what's evil to you may not be evil to me.
That being said, I usually play a chaotic good character in role play; I have played neutral and chaotic evil, as well as some lawful characters, but my definite preference is chaotic good.

Going out on a limb here: At times I follow nether good nor evil, but instead use another compass as my guide, Honor. If honor demands that I spare a man's life though he has committed an evil act for all the wrong reasons, then I will do so, yet if honor demands that I make an example of a man and have him executed because no man, even me, can ever be above the laws of the land, then so be it, and subject me to the Nether Realms for it. Just my take on all this. Oh, my bad with the filter, sorry.

As a necromantic adept I can be a bit mutable, but I have seemed to keep in line with Lawful Evil most of the time. That is, I don’t necessarily go out on a bloodthirsty rampage to inflict unholy death upon those who dare look at me funny, but if agitated enough, I do get murderous. I usually try to dissuade people from such offensive actions that incur my wrath, but, alas. In other games/forums I am the same necromancer, but with Lawful Neutral tendencies.
One thing that is a pain is the difficulty in roleplaying an evil character without actually doing anything... evil. Hopefully the violence ban on the gardens will be lifted soon before I lose all interest in the gardens. I am not simply roleplaying for combat, but roleplaying is freedom, you should be allowed to do what you want.
I am WELL AWARE of the reasons why the violence ban has been implemented, no need to remind me. I've seen the stupidity firsthand.

Eh? The violence ban isn't new and it wont be going anywhere. it's just that it's been getting worse and the attitude of players has been getting worse. So, now rather than just watch people break the rules and let it go (a little bit or a lot) we have just put the foot down (so to speak).
I am not simply roleplaying for combat, but roleplaying is freedom, you should be allowed to do what you want.

Well, my personality probably tends to the slightly evil side. If I were a Jedi, I'd be darn easy to turn. But something about the ideas of chivalry, heroism, and valor always appealed to me. Now, I still attack lower characters, clanmates, and those other should-not-be-a-target players, but all's fair in love and war, right?

'dark side'
I prefer the term 'evil.' Star wars has corrupted the term 'dark side' to include merely the ignorant, frail, and misguided who believe they can use skills from the dark side to perform good deeds.
No over-the-top make it hurt so bad its funny business here. Just pure evil. The more downright bad, dirty, evil, mean, gross, repugnant, morally offensive, nasty, leave-no-doubt-about-it evil, the better.
Malfeasance, paranoia, anarchy, perversion, and hacking are the tools of my trade.
This thread does not belong in the 'out-of-character' section.

I generally like to play as somewhere in between a chaotic good alignment and a chaotic neutral alignment. The kind of guy that generally tries to help out, but likes to do stuff in his own way. Although I do like the idea of a mostly good person being mentally snapped and turning to more or less all out evil or insanity at the least.

I think there are kicks to both spectrums. I guess it really comes down to who you think the coolest character type is, that is who you will try to portray yourself to be.
The Hero who always saves the day.
The Villian who is always a match for the Hero.
The mysterious Neutral character who seems so wise.
My character is probably a combination of all of these. Does this make me bi-polar?

I tried playing a Paladin one time in AD&D a long time ago. Man was that boring. "idle time is the devil's own playground" I have to agree with you, being good is boring and being evil doesn't feel right. Chaotic good, as Sneakabout described is probably closest to how I play. Similar to the anime character Inuyasha or Wolverine.
