I really want to play the P&P Dungeons and Dragons, but, alas, I just can't get a group together that wants to, so I'm planning on buying one of the computer games. Right now I'm looking at Neverwinter Nights, but I also think that Baldur's Gate looks pretty cool. I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions of which to get.
BG is primarily the official campaign. You either play it solo or multi-player.
NWN has an official campaign, but there's a big community making modules and stuff. Lots more to do if you want to go that way.

NeverWinter Nights has a bad storyline and isn't immersive enough - buy it for the fan mods, some of those are excellent.
The Baldur's Gate series is the defining computer RPG by which all others are judged (and found wanting). Play it through starting from BG 1 - then play the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion. Then BG II, Shadows of Amn and then Throne of Bhaal. They have the best storylines and are immersive. (graphics not too good, but worth it) "Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads! Swords for Everybody!"
If ye be wantin' the 3.5E rules in a fithful way, play Temple of Elemental Evil, as it has the most accurate rules rendition and pretty good graphics (bit buggy without patching).
One you've played BG, (and ye will be cursed for all time if ye don't, just by not having played it) try Icewind Dale - same engine, bit more emphasis on combat but a decent plot and rather good scenery. Then try the expansion and then Icewind Dale II (not as good, but by that time ye'll be addicted.)
After that, play Neverwinter Nights and put a Voodoo curse on whoever said that 3-part quests were a good idea.
"You have to rescue a princess...!"
"Great, where is she?"
"...who has been split into three parts!"
*commits suicide*

Oops - left out the best RPG engine. Morrowind, whilst not based on DnD, has a supreme engine, beautiful landscapes and very good gameplay. You play from a First Person perspective and because of this, you get things that don't appear in other games (true flying monsters, jumping puzzles, fly spells, 3-D firballs etc.). If they had included multiplayer, it would be the best RPG on the market(because of the modding potential), but even with only single player, the map is so huge that you will never visit everything. Really, it's huge. Baldur's gate has a better storyline, but Morrowind is very non-linear, so if ye liked Deus Ex, this could be the game for ye...
